| Martyn Smith is the Show Director of the Pirates Adventure, in charge of everything that happens on stage. From building a second giant galleon, to choosing the costumes, he was faced with the task of transporting the show from Mallorca to Miami, and getting it back again safely!
Q. How did the Pirate Mutiny in Miami go this winter?
A. It all happened so quickly I don't think any of us have much time to reflect! It seems no time at all since we set off from Palma and arrived at the site in Miami which was only a car park then! We had about two weeks to turn it into a theatre venue. We'd never done anything like it before so it was great that all the planning we did before leaving Mallorca paid off. We were lucky that we worked with some great people there. Everyone really did 24 hours a day and put 110% into what they were doing.
Q. What about the American audiences? Did they enjoy the show?
A. I was really nervous about the audience because I didn't know what to expect. I know that British audiences love the show but what would the Americans make of it? In the end I had nothing to worry about as they absolutely loved it! I got the same feeling as I do when I sit in the crowd in Magaluf, the same warmth with the audience enjoying it and getting involved. I'd definitely say that taking the show to Miami was a great experience but it's also nice to be back in Mallorca.
Q. Now you are back in your home theatre in Magaluf what plans do you have for this summer and beyond?
A. One of the good things about going to Miami is that we have not had a four-month break this year so the cast and crew are incredibly used to working together. Even though we have eight new members of cast, everyone is well-rehearsed and really ready to get going again. I'd say that this is easily the most talented team that we have ever had at Pirates.
We have also made some changes so anyone who has seen the show before will get some nice surprises if they come again this year. There is some new music. In fact almost 80% of the music for the Adventure show has been specially commissioned so it is original which gives the show a new freshness.
Anyone who has been to see the Pirate show will know that we are constantly developing it and adding new things. This year we have taken the successful and popular elements of the show and built on those to make them even bigger and more spectacular. The show is always evolving.
As for the future, going to Miami has proven that we can take the show on the road. I think it would really work well in the UK so taking the show on tour would not scare me. For now though, I am happy to focus on the 2007 summer season here in Mallorca and hope its going to be another great success for the Pirates Adventure!
